My Favorite Things

In my last post I mentioned how much I've learned from other mom's....so I figured I'd share some of my favorite things at the moment. Some recommended by others, and some that I found on my own - either way, I like them and use them because they are awesome. So here goes:

-The Moby Wrap...it's a long peice of material that you use to wrap around yourself and carry the baby in. Those baby bjorn things were just never comfortable for me - I think I'm too short or something, but the Moby feels like I'm wearing a t-shirt with a baby crammed inside. It's all soft cottony goodness, and my sister in law Carie bought it for me based on her friend's (a mom of FIVE) recommendation. It came with a book of instructions, which was basically sort of a nightmare to figure out - so I asked the mother of five to show me how to do it....she gave me lessons and now that I know what I'm doing, it's by far my favorite item ever...I use it AT LEAST once a day. I've never worn it and not had Adam fall fast asleep - It leaves my hands free to work or get stuff done around the house - I can walk on the beach with my dog with him in it - I grocery shop in it so the car seat doesn't take up so much space in the cart - and anytime I don't want to deal with the stroller or car seat, I bust out the wrap and away we go! I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE my Moby and I recommend it to everyone. In fact I was recently at a birthday party where I had 3 mom's ask me to show them how it works and try on with their babies, and they thought it was pretty great too. I think I should be a consultant for that company or something since I'm wearing it all the time and constantly answering peoples questions about it.
- Aquaphor...this was also recommended by my sister in law Carie who's kids all have super sensitive skin. In all honesty, Adam has only had a few minor rashy spots since he was born, but this stuff nipped it in the bud and it was gone by the morning. She swears it's the best stuff she's tried in her eight years of motherhood...and although I like Boudreaux's Butt Paste too - the Aquaphor seems to work faster and not leave that pasty white stuff on my kid.

-Dimmer Switch...this was my handy dandy hub's idea. In our bedroom we both each have bedside lamps that we read by before bed...less bright then the overhead light, but still too bright for the kid at times. So the day after we came home from the hospital - hubs went to the hardware store and found dimmer switches that can be plugged into any lamp, and he kindly installed one for me on my side of the bed. He attached it to the bed, so I just have to reach up and turn it on when I need it in the middle of the night...and it's low enough to not disturb anyone else in the room (which of course was hub's intention from the get go - haha). Anyway, it's FABULOUS!

- Papasan Bouncy Chair...or any bouncy chair for that matter. This was actually a hand-me-down from Carie, and I love it because it fits perfectly on my dining table (which is in my kitchen). The boy can watch me do dishes and fold laundry and make dinner, and he's right there so I can talk to him the whole time. I also set it up with a towel at bathtime and put him in there after bathing him at the kitchen sink to dry him off. I can also remove a couch cushion and put it on the couch...and I can also put him in there and bring him into the bathroom with me when I'm showering or drying my hair, etc, etc. - It also folds up flat so I can bring it to Nana and Pop's when they babysit.

-Nature Babycare Wipes...I found these online and liked them immediately. They are biodegradable which is awesome, and they are very clothlike and bigger than regular wipes. I also like the soft scent used, and the fact that they are environmentally friendly is a huge plus. (for the record, I also tried the biodegradable diapers - but didn't like them...they felt too rough and stiff to me - but I've heard some people love them)

-Exercise Ball...currently parked on top of our dogs bed - ha! I discovered this thing at my friend Ashlee's house when I was pregnant. She had one at her house and it felt so good on my back to sit on that thing - we headed out to Marshalls and her husband found me one for 10 bucks. Well, this gray one is currently ball purchase #5 because we discovered that owning a big rubber ball isn't really condusive to sharing a house with three cats...and we've woken up to many a deflated rubber ball....but I love it so much and use it so often, we just keep buying them. I sat on it like crazy during my pregnancy, and after Adam was born, we discovered it's excellent for getting him to calm down or go to sleep. I think he must remember that motion from being in my belly or something. For anyone like me who has a baby who likes to be in MOTION and is sick and tired of pacing the halls...get thyself a big bouncy ball pronto because you can bounce your baby and watch Two and a Half Men at the same time....brilliant.

-Tap Lights...they are all over my house. I'm like an infomercial on crack over here. From our second day home we focused on getting AJ to recognize the difference between night and day...and it's hard to do that when you get up at 2am and turn on the kitchen light to make a bottle - or turn on his bedroom light to change a diaper - or turn on the bathroom light so you can stumble to the toilet to pee with big white spots in front of your eyes. So we purchased tap lights (and rechargeable batteries). I have one in almost every room of the house, and they're just bright enough to see what I'm doing, but not bright enough to fully wake up the critter. So he stays sleepy - gets a clean diaper - a full belly -and back to bed without me stubbing a toe on anything. Perfect.

- Colic Calm...this stuff was actually recommended to me by my friend Kelli whom I met in birthing class. You can read the website about it here. Kelli's daughter is a month older than AJ and she had horrible acid reflux and problems with gas. After being put on medication for the reflux, they discovered colic calm and it changed their world completely. She gave me a sample of it and I took it home and tried it out during one of his colicky episodes and it worked like a charm. He almost instantly calmed down and fell asleep after using this stuff. It's blacker than black and looks pretty lethal, but I checked with my doctor and he said it's fine and if it works then USE IT. It's homeopathic and also FDA approved. Kelli discovered quickly that it's messy when using the dropper it comes with, so she bought a pacifier medicine dropper. That's what we use it as well and it's great. Highly recommended for anyone with gassy kids!

-Seventh Generation Diapers...this one was also recommended by Kelli - and I discovered I really like them. They're not cute diapers, just plain brown and boring - but they work well and they're environmentally friendlier than regular diapers. They fit smaller than regular diapers, so I had to go up a size earlier than normal, but that's no big deal. I wish I had the patience for cloth, but I don't - so I'm doing the best I can with these :)

-Dekor Diaper Pail...speaking of diapers! I'd always seen the diaper genie, but never really liked it because you have to open it with your hands. So when we were registering, we saw this hands free one and decided to give it a shot. We love it - and it's got a really neat little bag cutting system inside, so when you need to dump it, it's super easy to change out.

-WhiteBoard...we have this handy little item on our fridge, and I use it constantly. Since becoming pregnant and my brain turning instantly to swiss cheese - I never seem to remember anything anymore. So my grocery list goes on here, phone numbers, when I changed my Brita filters, when I gave the dog her flea treatment...all that stuff that I used to be able to remember and now I can't. VERY WELL USED ITEM!

-Cloth Diapers...this one I've learned just from all my years of babysitting other peoples kids. These things make the absolute best burp clothes/spit rags! They absorb everything, and they're big enough to catch a surprise feeding reversal...you know, that event that follows the BLORK sound your kid makes after drinking a bottle? Also? They're great for dusting furniture...hehe

-Swaddler...sort of like a sleeping bag with velcro....otherwise known in our house as a "baby straightjacket". See, the boy has an intense startle reflex and STILL wakes himself up from his hands flailing around. When he was first born, we became pros at the tight burrito swaddle you learn at the hospital - but as he's gotten bigger, he's learned how to muscle his way out of a blanket swaddle....which is when velcro became our friend. When it's not too hot, we'll put him in this just for nighttime sleeping and he sleeps like an angel.

-Angel BabyCare system...speaking of angels! This thing gives me so much peace of mind at night, I sleep much sounder because of it. It's basically a little pad that goes under the mattress where your baby sleeps and if any movement stops (such as stopped breathing) for 15 seconds, an alarm will sound to warn you. I know it works because 9 times out of 10 when I get up at 3am, I forget to turn it off when I take Adam out of his cradle, and I'll be walking down the hall to the kitchen when I hear BEEP BEEP BEEP BEEP...and then hubs groans and turns it off. I'm so not kidding when I say this happens almost every night. BUT, I like knowing that I don't have to check to see that he's breathing 49832 times a night because I'm a total spaz and that's exactly what I'd be doing if I didn't have this thing.

So there you have it - my current list of favorite things. Won't you all please do your own list (whether you have kids or not...) of favorite things so I can learn about stuff I may not know about???? puh-lease???

A Response...

Thank you everyone for all of your thoughts/opinions/etc. about the sleeping issues. I feel the need to respond to April's comment...I DO NOT think you and Jeannette are nuts! I am a huge believer in doing what works - and I think every person's journey through this whole parenthood thing is different. I'm reading the no-cry sleep solution book because it was recommended by a fellow mom, and because I figure it's worth a shot before going through the torture of letting him cry. Honestly, at nighttime, he's not that bad. He usually falls asleep around 10pm...wakes up around 3 or 4am...gets changed, eats, and then is right back in bed 30 minutes later...and then he'll usually sleep until around 7 or so. We do have the oddball days where he wakes up more often...or even the oddball days where he'll sleep from 10pm until 8am the next morning. He just goes through different spurts now and then. I may very well end up having to let him cry, but I honestly feel like he's too little right now. Some of you may agree with me, and some may not - but that's just how I feel.
I'm only partway through the book, and there are a few things I disagree with...a friend of mine is reading a "cry it out" type book - so we're going to swap and take from each book what we can and leave the rest. Every baby is so different, you know?
My biggest challenge lately is naps - or lack thereof. I can't let him cry it out during the day because of my work phones...our house isn't big enough that my customers wouldn't hear him screaming in the background. I should probably try it over a weekend, but somehow it seems lately we've always been out and about and unable to really focus on changing his sleep habits.
He's not difficult to get to sleep at all...it's just that he sleeps for 10 minutes and then "BINK" eyes open, wide awake and ready to play. And then a couple hours later we do it all over again...until around 9 or so when he's just plain exhausted and fighting it with every ounce of stubborness he has, until he finally collapses at 10pm.
He is also not used to his crib yet, and seems to wake up EVERY time I put him in there. He'll stay in there for a while and play and stare at his mobile...but he won't sleep no matter what. I feel like the space might be too big for him, and my sister (who is visiting currently from Minnesota) suggested putting a rolled up blanket in the middle to sort of seperate it during his naptime until he gets used to the crib....said she had to do that with my nephew.

I also struggle with helping him get to sleep every time instead of letting him fall asleep on his own. He's only done that a handful of times - and the thing is, I LIKE rocking him to sleep - it's like our time together (maybe since I'm not nursing it's like my bonding time or something?) - but I just worry that I'm setting myself up for problems in the future with him being able to self soothe himself to sleep. Part of me feels like it doesn't matter at this age, and I should just do what I want - but another part of me feels like it's my responsibility to teach him to not be so needy of me...not just for my own sake, but for anyone who watches him as well.

Overall, I guess our sleep issues aren't too bad considering I'm getting a decent night of sleep - but on those oddball days like my last post when I'm stumbling around bleary eyed and trying to remember my own name...it seems alot worse. ha!

I like to ask other mom's what they've dealt with and how and sort of arm myself with different methods and advice so that I can try this and try that and use everyone else's expertise until I find one that works for my kid. We did this at the hospital too - every nurse we came across had a different method of burping, so we started asking EVERY different nurse what their method was, so by the time we came home - we had armed ourselves with plenty of different positions to try once we were home and he was fighting the belly bubbles.
I'm so impressed with other mom's and the knowledge that comes from experience - I've learned alot of tricks of the trade just by asking questions.
So thanks everyone - I feel like you all are a wealth of information out there ...and I like hearing what everyone else has gone through in certain situations and what works for you :)

Catching up...

For the record...I'm so tired today that I just spent 10 minutes going through my son's itty bitty pockets before throwing his clothes in the wash and then realizing that HELLO - he's 3 months old, DUH.
I also was getting a bottle ready and I almost poured coffee into it instead of water...that's the SECOND time I've done that.
Last night sucked. The boy is a power napper. I have no idea how to break him of this habit. He thinks it's fabulous to sleep for 10 minutes at a time alllll day, only to be so overtired at night, that he kicks and fusses and fights getting to sleep until he passes out from pure exhaustion. Usually he's a good nighttime sleeper and only wakes up once around 3 or 4am - but last night, he decided to wake up every single time I put him down, which means I was up pretty much most of the night.
For all you mom's out there. Got any tips of the trade on how to break my kid of the bad habit I've gotten him into of sleeping in my arms? Also - is it possible to put a baby in their bed when they are tired and actually have them fall asleep on their own? because if so, I think mine....is broken. It's never happened, I've tried and tried and tried and if I want him to sleep, I have to get him to sleep and THEN put him down. And the power napping...anything I can do about that?

Otherwise, hubs has been dealing with kidney stones for the last 3 weeks. It's been really hard on him because he's either in pain or drugged up and sleepy....which means it's also been hard on me because I've taken the brunt of the parenting during my most busy time of year (fiscal year end/beginning). We're both tired and ready for the whole kidney issue to be over and done with.

My house is a wreck and I'm off to clean it :)

Finally....a proper "Thank You"

You know about blogger friends? People you don't actually know in person, but you FEEL like you know because you read about their lives on a regular basis and comment back and forth? I think blogger friends are awesome and I sometimes feel so connected and cared for by these people that I don't really know...it's just an amazing thing.
So one day I was visiting my friend Alison...and she presented me with a gift bag. She told me to read the card first, so I opened this adorable card and discover that it was signed by Alison...and 3 blogger friends - April, Kelly, and Joanna. I was blown away! So I reached into the bag, and I pulled out a teeeeny tiiiiiny onsie with a tuxedo imprint!!!! I cracked up as Alison told me April had found it and they all collaborated to give it to me. Oh man, it was so awesome...I can't even tell you. See, Alison once made a snarky (rightfully so) comment on her blog about what hubs was wearing at my baby shower. My mom had told him to dress up - so he did...with camo shorts - a hat on backwards - and a t-shirt with a tuxedo imprint on the front....yyyyeaaah - stylin!
Thus...the teeny, tiny onsie was an absolutely perfect and thoughtful gift :)
Then Alison handed me a big envelope and said "and now this"
and I'm like "???????"
"Just open it" she said...
and I proceeded to pull out a letter from the IKHFC (the international knit-hat fan club). BWAAA!
To explain - Joanna is bow obsessed and has two very adorable girls who are always sporting bows in their hair that match their outfits. Now, Kelly also has an adorable girl who is learning the "ways of a matching bow". I haven't noticed any obsessions with April and her also very adorable girls, but I might not be looking hard enough :) (correct me if I'm wrong here)
So when I had a BOY - Alison was nice enough to do a guest post for me on this blog, and beg the question of the IBFC president "what is the proper accessory for a boy? since a bow is just not happenin".
And here is my answer...a letter....ON LETTERHEAD no less...that basically said Knit-Hats are Where It's At.

She also sent these three super cute knit-hats as part of my "welcome packet".
Oh man, I was laughing so hard at this whole thing...absolutely hilarious - and so much thought went into it all! I felt super special to receive such neat stuff from people I hardly know! (except for Alison of course)
So I immediately put the little tux onsie on Adam, and eventually we left Alison's and headed home to greet hubs and show off our new duds.
When hubs got home, I was sitting on the couch with Adam facing me, so his outfit was hidden. I handed hubs the card and picked up the camera:
Reading the card...
He was suspicious:
But when I turned our son around and showed him our gift...he was STOKED
And shortly thereafter...Alison presented me with another gift...camo shorts for AJ - so I snapped an appropriate picture of my "Boys"
So girls...Joanna, Kelly, April, and Alison....I'm so ashamed that it's taken me this long to send you a proper thank you post for the nice thing you all did. But please know that I truly appreciate it and I found it to be absolutely hilarious. I've learned something from each of you about friendship and parenting, and I'm so glad to know you all and call you my friends!

Mad About Hubs

Since having a baby...I've discovered that some of my favorite old TV programs are played in the wee hours of the early morning. I've got my DVR set to record old episodes of Wings and Mad About You (which was a favorite of mine). At the beginning of an episode we were watching the other day, Jaime walked out into the living room holding a new roll of toilet paper in one hand, and an empty roll of toilet paper in the other. She said to her husband Paul "Watch Me" and proceeded to show him how to replace the roll and then left the room.
I said "she's brilliant...I should do that for you"
hubs said "har-de-har, I know - I know" and we chuckled.
Fast forward to tonight...
See, I have a problem with leaving diapers everywhere. Not poopy ones of course, but when I change a wet diaper on the couch or the floor, I'll wrap it securely in a little ball , and then set it aside....of course meaning to toss it the next time I get up - but I have a really bad habit of forgetting. Which means there might be the oddball diaper in the office, the car, the bedroom, the living room, etc, etc. Gross, I know - but there it is.
So tonight, hubs walked into the office where I was feeding our boy - he had the diaper pail in one hand and a little balled up diaper in the other. He said "Watch Me" and proceeded to throw the diaper into the pail....and then walked out of the room.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAAAAA! Brilliant...gotta love him :)

Absorbing every minute...

Hubs and I watched the movie "Definately, Maybe" last night...and LOOOOVED IT. That little Abigail Breslin is a little spitfire, and a fabulous actress.
Anyway, after that movie of course we were both in sappy moods. We were on the couch with our son sleeping between us. I stood to pick him up and take him to his bed...but I stopped in my tracks and just stared at his tiny sleeping body.

I said "look at him, he's so little...his whole little self fits on one sofa cushion"
Hubs said "yes, he does"
I said "and he's going to grow bigger and bigger"
Hubs said "yes, he will"
I said "and taller and taller"
Hubs said "yes, and he will slam his bedroom door at some point"
I said "yes, and may say "I hate you!" in anger"
Hubs said "yes, and stomp out of the room"
I said "yes, but he'll also say "I love you""
Hubs said "yes, and he'll laugh and be silly with us"
I said "and he'll know that he's loved"
Hubs said "and one day, he'll become a father himself"
I said "and he'll finally get it..."
Hubs said "and he'll finally get it..."

and with tears in our eyes, and smiles on our faces...we picked up our sleeping son and carried him off to bed.

giggle

Isn't it funny how you can spend 90% of your time trying to make your kid laugh, and they end up being thrilled by something completely random? So of course you do it 59723 times over and over because it cracks you up that they think it's so funny?
The boy was laying on the sofa next to me and fussing and getting cranky even though we'd done the three B's (the checklist for when he's fussy - Butts, Bottles, and Burps), so I grabbed his hands and said "Why don't YOU tell ME what to do?? and he just thought that was hilarious - so tell me...is this considered laughing? giggling? or just abundant smiling?

Proof of a Quirky Family...

Soooo, Fathers Day. Hubster's parents were in town, so I got up with the boy at 7am...made coffee, and let hubby sleep in. We went out for Brunch at Marie Callenders and then hit up Avila Valley Barn and ate some fresh roasted corn which was fabulous. His parents left around 4ish and we headed over to my brother's house....where he was a "man with a plan".
I love my brother dearly - he is such a wingnut and ALWAYS makes me laugh. He's continually coming up with crazy ideas and the one he had for this Father's Day was a show stopper and very picture worthy. I snapped away like crazy because it was all so very blogworthy. See - I record a certain show called Diner's, Drive-in's and Dives for my brother. He doesn't have cable, and so I record all kinds of things for him - but he's taken a distinct liking to DD and D. On one recent show, they profiled a place that made a HUUUUGE hamburger. I'm talking huge. So huge that they used one of those loooong spatulas that are used to get pizza's out of an oven, just to flip over the patty. Thus began the wheels in Aaron's head spinning and a crazy father's day surprise was born.
Upon arriving, I saw these...and thought Carie might be making a cake or something...

Didn't think much of it because Carie is a master cake baker...but then I saw these:

ummmm, yeah. That my friends is a FOUR POUND hamburger. No lie. And those up there? HOMEMADE HAMBURGER BUNS. They are officially insane.

Aaron began building hubster's burger with cheese, while neice Keeley read off the condiments hubs wanted:

Except that hubby doesn't like lettuce or onions or tomatoes on his burger and Aaron anticipated building a supreme masterpiece, which can't be done without all the fixins - so he left hubs a message about his picky ways in ketchup:

Luckily - Dad wanted ALLLLL the fixins, so Aaron went to town building his burger...observe:

(glass of wine and a giant burger anyone?? hee! )

Dad was thrilled:

But said "there's no way I can even begin to take a bite of this" - and yet proceeded to try:

Aaron built another "regular sized" burger for comparison - but in all honesty, that "regular sized" burger was also impossible to get your mouth around.

Let the fun begin...eating time!

Lemme tell you - we all laughed SO HARD during this process...it was absolutely hysterical to see three grown men actually try and eat these gigantic frickin burgers. Funny, funny, funny! My brother is too much. And now he thinks every year we gotta come up with something BIG. I smell a new family tradition coming on...

Also? He got a very cute and cuddly father's day gift...his name is Cooper

Growing...

Our little man turned 2 months old this last Sunday. Part of me can't believe it's been 2 months already, and another part of me feels like he's always been here.

We had our 2 month check up today and he weighs 12 pounds and is 23 inches long. He's really strong and holds his head up like a champ. Still has a wee bit of bobblehead happening, but as time goes on he seems to be gaining better control.
His hair is still strawberry blond in color and it's growing back in on the sides, so he's got less of the trump comeover going on. His eyes sometimes look brown, and sometimes look hazel/greenish...we really can't tell - and it seems to depend on what he's wearing, so who knows what color they'll end up being.
He had to get an oral vaccine and two shots in each leg today...poor little guy. He screamed during the shot process, but once I picked him up and cuddled him, he calmed down quickly - quite the trooper I must say!
He's really starting to smile alot now - and I just know that he's right on the verge of laughing which I can't wait for :)

I have several posts half completed, so this week I'll try and get them finished to finally catch up on this blog. In the meantime....squishy baby pics and even some video!!

One of my vendors at work, from the LA area, who I speak with all the time - but don't actually know, sent my kid a blanket embroidered with his name and date. I took some pics to email...

He actually thinks he can hold his own bottle now...

This is a super short, accidentally filmed video of his tummy time. I was trying to take a picture and had it on video instead. Thought it was cute anyway :)

Hubs is home this week - and since our boy is pretty sleepy after his crazy shot-filled morning, I just snapped these pictures of them snoozing on the couch.

Be Still My Heart!!

Tagged...

Hmmm, well - since Jeannette tagged me...here we go:

What I was doing 10 years ago today:

-I was 20 years old and living with my boyfriend at the time...a long haired, motorcycle riding, nice enough, but all wrong for me guy who I'd started dating at 18, and stayed with until I was 23, yikes.
-I was working for the company I'm with now, as a dispatcher and inventory clerk.
-Probably spending way too much time trying to be susie homemaker with the cooking and the cleaning and trying to make our crappy apartment in AG actually tolerable enough to live in.
-I had just found out about and met in person, my half sister Leanne for the first time.
-Now that I think about it, there was quite a bit of family drama going on...dealing with an uncle's suicide - me moving out and not being on the best of terms with my parents or my brother - my grandfather's disapproval and broken relationship - and then you throw in a half sister my brother and I didn't know about...yeah - alot going on that year!

Five things on my to-do list today:

-Drink coffee
-Get my purchase order book organized and updated...and post checks
-Submit offers on two houses in the area
-Change diapers, make bottles, and keep my child occupied and happy
-Meet Alison at 4pm to pick up our veggies from the Harvest Share

Five snacks that I enjoy:

-Haribo gummi bears
-String cheese
-Strawberries
-Slurpees
-Gardetto's mustard pretzels

Five things I'd do if I was a millionaire:

-Buy houses for myself and my brother's family so we'd all be assured to live in the same area
-TRAVEL everywhere I've ever wanted to go...and some places I don't
-Set up a foundation of some sort, either to do with kids or animals

Busy Bees

So last night, my little dude FINALLY fell asleep at about 5pm. He crashed hard...so hard in fact, that we couldn't wake him up. We had a pediatrician appointment this morning, so I wanted to give him a bath last night - but after him sleeping through a diaper change and many attempts on our part to rouse him...we had no luck, and felt bad for the guy since he'd been up so long and decided to let him sleep. He woke up twice during the night, which is standard - so I guess he's back to his normal schedule. Yesterday must have been a fluke thing.

We woke up at 7:30 this morning and hit the ground running...I immediately started the coffee pot, fed the boy, settled him into his crib with his little rainforest music maker, and I jumped into the shower, got dressed - then I stripped the kid and gave him a bath, got him dressed and calmed down. He has decided he likes the bath, but HAAATES when we take him out, so it takes some effort to chill him out afterwards...please observe the beginning stages of the meltdown:

and then I had juuuuust enough time to semi-dry my hair and put on my shoes before we had to head out the door for our 1 month check up with the doctor. Our doctor's office is right downtown, which means parking is a major pain....we found a spot, I dug up some change for the meter, and walked in the door 2 minutes early - WOOO! Granted, my hair was still half wet, and I had no make up on whatsoever - but dude, they're lucky I didn't stumble in there braless and stinky, so who cares about the make up - we were EARLY, and it was only 9:15!

The boy weighs 11.2 pounds, which means he's gaining about an ounce a day...holy mackerel. Doc was thrilled and said to keep it up. He also measured 22 inches, which means he's already grown 2 full inches since birth, which blows my mind. We talked alot about feedings and gassiness and colic and all that jazz, and then my kid had to get a Hep B shot. Now, they gave him one in the hospital, but they whisked him off to another room, so I wasn't there for that - or the vitamin K shot they gave him right after he was born. So the nurse comes into the room and says "okay mom, now I know this is your first time with the shot thing - so be prepared to have a hard time seeing him so upset...alot of mom's cry the first time (which I knew and was prepared for) - so just remember he'll be fine!"

So she reaches down, grabs his leg and administers the shot...

My kid went "heh - heh" and then proceeded to do the maggie simpson on his pacifier and look at me with giant suspicious eyeballs...and that was pretty much it. No screaming, no tears, barely even a peep out of the boy. The nurse was like "wow, he didn't even cry! no warning needed I guess eh?"...he's now sporting a groovy snoopy bandaid on his leg and all is well.

After our appointment, we hightailed it home so I could get some billing done - after about about an hour, I fed him....during which he decided to flash me his "yo-yo, wuz up" pose
After a quick change, we headed into the office (I go in on tuesdays and thursdays). If I time it right, he'll fall asleep in the car and stay sleeping the entire time I'm there, so I can bust out everything I need to do before he needs something. Today, I had alot of things to catch up on and then our printer decided to take a crap...so at one point, I was there long enough that I had to feed and change him again and luckily he was in a good enough mood to just chill out at my desk with me while I finished up my work. Then I loaded up my car with deliveries, and hightailed it home so I could print out the rest of my billing on my printer (since my boss had ours torn apart and it was getting late in the afternoon). So, after stopping at the house and printing everything I needed to, squeezing in another feeding and diaper change...it was time for me to drop the billing off to our customer - well, these are people who I've been talking to on the phone for 10 years, so once they knew I had the kid with me, it became an hour long visit with everyone in the office and the boy was passed around until he started to fuss from all the overstimulation...which is when I looked at the clock and realized it was 5pm and I was supposed to meet Alison to pick up the veggies for our harvest share - OOPS...I was a bit late. My critter was still upset and screaming when I got there, but Alison worked her magic and held him and swayed with him and he felt right asleep on her chest.

I got home and was finishing up some work and then suddenly we lost all our electricity. So, no more work for me! Luckily it came on in just enough time for our DVR to catch the Grey's finale...priorities, you know?

SO yes, busy busy day - but everything went well, and I'm so grateful that my little man travels well and is able to go with the flow on days like today. I got alot accomplished and I actually look forward to my in-office days because to be honest...I can get a bit of cabin fever being stuck in this house.

We have company coming this weekend, so I've got some tidying up to do tomorrow and then my dad is coming to have lunch with me and he's going to have hang time with his grandson for a bit afterwards, so I can get some WORK done.

On that note, whaddya say it's PICTURE time hmmm?
The other day, I was getting my critter ready for a bath, and as I was pulling off his shirt, it got stuck on his giant noggin...so I grabbed the camera and had some fun. May I present to you, mind reader extraordinaire, The Great Adamski!!!

I shall tell you your future....

Let me meditate for a moment...

hmmmmm, you're future looks like it will be....

One pissed off kid if you don't get this thing off my head, and the camera out of my face!
HA!

Seriously, does the boy know how to work that bottom lip or WHAT?

The Birth Story

While it's still relatively fresh in my mind...I figured it was high time I sat down and typed out my birth story. Someday 10 years from now, perhaps I'll be able to come back and read this and be reminded of that time in my life and maybe I'll have completely different thoughts about the whole experience by then, ha!
Here goes:

So Monday, April 14th is when I had my last appointment. If you all remember, I was still only 1cm dialated and not at all effaced. I was supposed to go in for a non-stress test on Wednesday, and they scheduled me for an induction on that Saturday. That night, we picked up a Klondike pizza (my fave!) and sat down to watch the movie "No Reservations". We headed for bed around 11pm. I stayed up and read for a while and then tossed and turned because my back was hurting . Eventually at around midnight, I got out of bed because I was so uncomfortable. I was feeling waves of backpain....completely different from any of the Braxton Hicks contractions I'd felt before, so I wasn't really sure that what I was feeling were even contractions. I considered maybe a pulled back muscle - or gas....but then I decided to start timing things, and the waves were coming every few minutes or so. As the hour went on, the pain became much more intense and I found myself pacing around the living room and up and down the hallway trying to ease the pain and wondering if I was in labor. I finally woke up hubs at about 1am and told him what was going on...he got up and started timing for me, and within a short time - he saw the look of pain on my face and decided to call the doctor. We got the A-OK to head to the hospital so they could monitor and assess me.
We got dressed and grabbed all our bags and climbed into the car...both of us bleary eyed and baffled at the TYPE of pain I was feeling. My back hurt so bad, that sitting in the car was torture - I just wanted to be walking around and moving my hips. I was still timing contractions at that point, but once the pain reached a certain level I actually said "screw this!", threw the stopwatch into the back seat and told hubs to step on it because IT HURT.
We got to the hospital and paced in front of the ER doors until someone finally let us in. At that point, I was having to lean against the wall to get through the contractions and hubs was eyeballing me with worry. We walked back to labor and delivery...they got us settled into a room and then wanted me to lie down on the bed so they could hook up the fetal monitors and see what was going on. Lying on the bed was absolutely the LAST place I wanted to be...my back hurt so much worse laying down, it was horrible - but I had to suck it up at least until they could check me. At that point, I was still only 1cm dialated...but about 70% effaced...and definately having contractions. I begged to be allowed to stand up next to the bed because I was so uncomfortable laying down - and they finally let me as long as I stayed in one spot so the monitors still worked. It felt so much better to sway back and forth and just MOVE...

After about 45 minutes, they checked me again and I was at 3cm - so FINALLY we officially were admitted and on our way! Hubs called all the family and went out to the car to get all our stuff - while I stood there in the room by myself pacing around and feeling really emotional about the fact that we were actually finally in labor and going to meet our baby.

I was able to handle things for a while, although the back pain was horrible. My mom and dad showed up and then Aaron and Carie showed up....mom and carie were GREAT about knowing where to push on my back and what positions to help me get in so I'd be more comfortable. Thank GOD those two were there to support me - not that hubs wasn't helping because he was doing awesome, it was just nice to have people there who've been through it before, you know?
Anyway, I finally decided I couldn't take the pain anymore and asked for drugs. They gave me something called Staydol (sp?) which was some fabulous stuff, lemme tell you...I thought I could go through the whole thing on that stuff. It didn't necessarily take away the pain, but I just didn't care that I was in pain, which is odd when I think about it - but that's how I remember feeling. I asked if I could just skip the epidural and keep taking the Staydol, but they said no because my kid feels the effects of that drug, and so it was for early and active labor only. Ooookay, so bring on the epidural!
I was actually quite terrified of the whole epidural process, but with all that back pain - I could have cared less if someone hit me over the head with a cast iron skillet....so it wasn't that bad. I did get the shakes pretty easily though...like when your adrenaline is pumping and you just shake uncontrollably. My mom kept asking if I was cold, but it was just my body reacting to everything, especially the meds. I have to say though, I HATED the feeling of my legs going numb....that sooo buggged me. I much prefered the Staydol over the epidural anyday, but at least the back pain was eased. I could still feel the contractions, but they were easy after that...and I was 6cm. At one point, I remember puking my ever loving guts out while poor hubs held the bucket. He's a sympathy puker, so let me just tell you he is a TROOPER because he didn't even gag...he just held that bucket and told me everything was going to be okay.
THEN - what I was worried about happening with the epidural...happened. Everything pretty much stopped. If I remember correctly, I fell asleep during that time - woooo! But I was also getting nowhere...when my contractions started back up, I was grateful because I was worried I'd wrecked everything by getting the medication. Fast forward five hours later, and I was still at 6cm. BAH.
The doc broke my water and there was meconium in the amniotic fluid - which can be risky because of course they don't want the baby inhaling any of that. My doc guessed that the kid's head was stuck behind my pelvic bone because he STILL hadn't dropped and at that point suggested doing a c-section and getting him out safely. He did give me the option of continuing on and trying to push him out...but I trust his opinion, and he really felt that it was better safe than sorry and doing a c-section would be the best thing. I got super emotional at that point. I think I was just so tired, after 17 hours of being in labor, and not really getting anywhere, and of course being scared of surgery, and worried about the baby...I just started to cry. Which is exactly when hub's parents arrived and walked into the room full of smiles and arms open for hugs. The poor things came exactly at the WRONG time because I was a wreck and I just put my hand up and asked them to give me a moment to absorb everything.
I'd say it was about 10 minutes later, they had me wheeling down the hall towards the OR....it was QUICK. Hubs got whisked off to get into scrubs and once I moved onto the operating table and laid down, the anesthesiologist started doing his thing and I started getting draped and prepped. I started to freak out when they strapped my arms down, and something in the medication I was given was causing some MAJOR shakes. I was kind of a mess...tears streaming down my red puffy face...shaking uncontrollably...exhausted and just completely freaked. I felt them start to do stuff to my belly, but I thought they were still prepping...hubs wasn't even in the room yet. I later found out that they'd already cut me open and when hubs walked into the room, he got an eyefull of my guts which got HIM freaked out. I calmed down alot when he finally appeared behind that drape and sat down by me. Luckily, they had left one arm unstrapped and he was able to hold my hand. I was shaking so badly, that he kept telling me to look into his eyes and not think about anything other than focusing on looking at him. I swear I had tears just pouring out that entire time...I distinctly remember feeling them go right into my ears and it bugged me. (weird the things you remember eh?)
It wasn't long before I felt a ton of tugging and pulling and movement and then I heard a loud "mmmmgaaaahhhh!" and it was the first sound my baby made. I will never forget that sound. I gulped and said "Ooooh" and hubs and I put our foreheads together and just relished the sound of our kid...it was an amazing moment. Then we were silent for what seemed like FOREVER while we waited for someone to tell us what it was. We knew they had to immediately check his lungs to make sure everything was okay, so we didn't see him right away...but finally we heard someone say "baby boy" and I think I said OH MY GOSH, I can't believe it! - but I probably just garbled that out because by then I was pretty much a sobbing mess. The next moments are such a blur, I just remember hubs was pacing between me and the baby and doctors and nurses were guessing weight because of his size....turns out his head WAS stuck behind my pelvic bone.
Shortly after that, they determined our kid was perfectly fine - they swaddled him up and handed him off to hubs, who stood there looking at me and looking at our baby and didn't know what to do. By this time I was asking for a puke bucket again and trying to toss to my cookies while still shaking horribly and of course crying.
The nurses told hubs he could walk out and see our family while they sewed me up and took me to recovery...but he just stood there looking at me dealing with what I was going through and holding our baby and said "I can't leave...I can't leave her like this" - he felt so torn. I looked at him and said "go honey, I'll be fine...go see our family" - and while he had a hard time leaving, he knew he couldn't stay with me anyway, so he brought Adam over so I could get a good glimpse of him, kissed me and then he left.

I remember being sewn up and them moving me onto a gurney and wheeling me down to recovery where things went kind of haywire. I remember feeling awful...absolutely horrible - and I was mumbling "why do I feel so awful?" over and over again - and still holding onto my puke bucket and dry heaving every few minutes...bleck. Then I sort of blacked out - and when I came to, I heard the nurse standing next to me on the phone saying "her blood pressure plummeted and I can't get it back up"..and then I heard her say "it's 60 over 64" (which to me sounded like ummm, close to DEATH...). It was so odd because I could hear everything around me, but I couldn't open my eyes, and I couldn't move (I tried, because she kept asking me to try) and I couldn't talk...which later it was explained that of COURSE I couldn't do any of those things with blood pressure that low. But what an emprisoning feeling that was....I so badly wanted to talk and ask questions about what was going on and am I going to like DIE or what? - but I had no ability to function at all, it sucked. Then I heard the nurse say that I'd spiked a fever and it was 102.7...and shortly after that I started up again with the shakes - only this time it was more like convulsions, I couldn't even keep my arms on the table..the nurse kept having to put them back over my stomach for me.
Let me just say - I was FUH-REAKED by this time. I was so sure that I was done for and I was never really going to see or hold my baby. I'm not sure just how serious the situation really was...or if it was just exaggerated because of the state I was in....but I think not being able to talk or see or move and just listening to everything that was going on, really made it seem worse than it was. The nurse was calling my OB and the anesthesiologist, so I kept hearing her tell people over the phone what was going on. Eventually she gave me a shot of demoral to stop the shakes...only it didn't work - so she gave me another one which finally did the trick. I was finally able to open my eyes (barely), and move my toes and fingers, and when I could finally talk - all I wanted was water. She gave me ice chips, but I think after me asking her 6927357 times for more ice chips, she finally caved and brought me a glass of water...which is when I proceeded to drain that sucker faster than you could blink an eye, and I then asked her 34286 times for more water. I was so thirsty, it was all I wanted...and I think I honestly drank about 10 glasses of water in about 15 minutes.
I finally asked about my baby and about hubs to make sure they were okay - and once assured they were fine, I fell asleep until they wheeled me back to my room which was around 9:30pm. Adam was born at 6:11pm - so I was in recovery a bit longer than normal.
I remember entering the room, and seeing hubs sitting in a rocking chair with our son - the biggest grin and yet biggest look of worry on his face once he saw me. He was alone...I can't remember where the family was...but I think it was nice that he had that time to just soak up everything we'd just been through.
Everyone was nice enough to wait to give him a bath until I was there. Course I was so doped up on demoral that I couldn't participate at all - hubs and my brother ended up doing it which was pretty darn cool. I felt so weird at that time, like I was just a lump with eyes...I was in and out and trying really hard to observe and take in everything around me - all the family being there and realizing that I had a SON. But I didn't even hold him, I was so out of it. Eventually, all the family left - my mom was totally upset about everything that happened in the recovery room, and was really concerned about leaving - but I told her hubs would be staying with me and we'd be fine.
So then at about 11pm, hubs got a phone call from our neighbor who was taking care of our pets that evening - and she regretfully informed him that one of our cats had escaped and she couldn't find him. We talked about it and decided he should head home and see if he could catch him and get him back inside. I told hubs it was okay if he couldn't stay overnight because I was so out of it, I was probably just going to sleep most of the night anyway. He went home and couldn't find the cat of course, so he stayed home waiting for the brat to show up on our doorstep, and I crashed into a demoral induced coma, while the nurses watched Adam.

At 4am, I woke up and actually felt somewhat normal...but something major was missing - so I buzzed the nurses and had them bring me my baby. I plucked him out of his little crib and put him on the bed with me while I peeled layer after layer of blankets off of him. I proceeded to spend the next hour just inspecting every inch of my critter, and crying and praying and being so thankful that he was okay and that he was here and he was safe and healthy - but also feeling an incredible sense of guilt that his first night in this world was not spent in my arms. There is a part of me that thinks I will never really get over that. I tried really hard not to have any expectations for labor...but I did not anticipate the emotional roller coaster I'd be on afterwards.
I held him tight and with tears running down my face, he fell asleep on my chest and I just sat there wide awake relishing every breath he took. The nurse who'd been there all night came in at the end of her shift at 6am, and took one look at him asleep on me and said "you know, I think that's exactly where he's wanted to be since he came into this world"...and then she smiled and patted my leg and left.
*sigh*, I could cry right now thinking about it because I think that's exactly what I needed to hear at that moment.

That morning, I begrudingly got myself out of bed at 8am and hobbled to the restroom - which in all honesty, made me wish we had a handicapped rail installed in our bathroom at home because yowza, that was an experience.
I tried to be on my feet alot that morning, or at least sitting in the rocking chair, because getting in and out of bed was really difficult and I knew that the more I could move around, the better off I'd be. Hubs came in at about 9am and was absolutely ecstatic to see me out of bed. He said I looked like a different person compared to the wife he left the night before.
We spent the next few hours napping together and marveling over the fact that we DID THAT and gazing at our little boy. All of hubs family arrived that afternoon, which was slightly chaotic with 3 little ones - but everyone was so excited to see the baby and they had to go back home that day, so we tried to let them hold him as much as possible. That night, my parents came by and took hubs to dinner - and then he was able to stay that night with me, which was awesome. I refused the good drugs and just stuck with Motrin because I'm super sensitive to medication and didn't want to be all loopy with a newborn to care for - again with the mother's guilt about not being able to care for him that first night, ha! (why do I get the feeling that mother's guilt is going to be a real bitch in this whole parenting process?)
The next day, we found out the hospital got slammed with five c-sections that morning, and we'd have to end up sharing a room. I was disappointed because they said it's really rare for that to happen, and I liked having our own room to ourselves. Lo and behold, our roomie gets wheeled in after her c-section and it turns out to be a couple from our birthing class. I overheard the nurse telling the husband that he wouldn't be able to stay the night since they were sharing a room, and he flat out said he wasnt' leaving...he couldn't leave his wife and newborn son...he'd stay awake all night if he had to - and I sympathized with the poor guy because I know how hubs felt leaving me that first night. So after cruising around all day and doing pretty darn well on just the Motrin - I asked one of the nurses (the nurses at French are FABULOUS by the way) what she thought my chances were of going home early, so not only could I get the heck out of dodge, but so they could have the room to themselves. I figured it was a long shot, but she said they were all marveling at how well I was doing and said she'd put in a good word for me and that I should ask my doctor about it when he stopped by.
My wonderful smiley doctor walked in shortly thereafter, and the first thing out of his mouth was "I hear that you are doing really well....AND I hear that you want to go home sooner rather than later". I laughed and said "well yeah, I think I'd get more rest at home don't you?"
and with a twinkle in his eye, he chuckled and said "well, I think we can make that happen - you've been a good patient, and on your feet and walking around fine - so I agree...you'll get more rest at home, let's get those bandages off, and I'll get the discharge papers in the works".
And THAT'S how I was able to get sent home within 48 hours - WOOOO!
The next couple of hours were a blur of paperwork and packing up and disbelief that they were going to just let us bring this kid home, just like that. Finally, we were wheeled out to the car where we strapped the boy into his carseat, and I sat in the backseat with him and cried almost the whole way home staring at his little sleeping face and amazed at everything that had taken place in the last couple of days and how our lives are forever changed by this experience.

All in all, I'd say that "birth day" was both the scariest and most wonderful day of my life thus far. Two very different emotions and feelings crammed into 24 hours...

and finally, "that's all I have to say about that". The End

Adjusting...

Wow, last post May 9th - this month is such a blur.
Let's just say that we're going through an adjustment period over here at Casa de Adam. I'm trying to juggle a baby who's schedule is less of a schedule and more like just a big question mark at the beginning of every day...a job where I have to answer phones from 8 to 5 which can be tricky with a baby in the background...also, the small mountain of paperwork I need to tackle...and a household, which let's face it, has taken a serious beating since the critter arrived. Sometimes, I can have the living room all clean and pretty when I go to bed and then with feedings in the middle of the night somehow by morning, it looks like a tornado came through, carrying empty bottles and spit rags in it's path. And let's see - oh yes, then there's ME...what with the hormones and the wierd allergic reactions....stumbling around bleary eyed with spit-up stains on my pajamas, bags under my eyes, hair in complete disarray (make-up? what's THAT?) and usually a cup of coffee in one hand because let's face it people - I'm never gonna make it without a cup of joe throbbing through my system at any given time.
I won't even go there about the poor neglected dog with the big brown eyes who wistfully looks at me through the window begging for more exercise than a walk around the block or a toss or two of the ball can give her. (aaannnnd I went there anyway)

Days like today are my biggest challenge - as I'm on about 3 and a half hours of sleep, and the boy has been awake since 7:30am...it is now, let's see...4pm?? That's right - he hasn't taken a single nap all day. Every time he falls asleep, I put him down, and seconds later he's awake and fussing because he's SO tired, but he's fighting it. I have one stubborn kid on my hands! (totally blaming that on hubs by the way). He is currently in his swing staring at his fish - silent and content, but also wide awake. At least I have a prayer of getting some sleep tonight...woooo!

I have all these posts that are half finished...one of course is the birth story - which if any of you know me, has to be this long winded rambling post instead of keeping it short and sweet. I also have several blogger friends who did the SWEETEST friggin thing for me and the boy a few weeks ago - and I have yet to either thank them, or finish my post (with pictures) about it all...you know who you are, and I so apologize for my procrastination of a proper thank you! Also, I half wrote about my first mothers day and how spoiled I was by the hubster...see folks? I have good intentions - but at the end of the day, sleep trumps blog posting.

So anyway -we're doing fine over here...trying to figure things out and learning the best way to streamline my day and keep all my balls in the air at the same time. I don't know how you people with work and kids and blogs manage to do it all and seem like you have it all together (ahem, KELLY and JOANNA). Do either of you have any words of wisdom for this caffinated mama? Because I honestly don't know how you two manage to get out of the house each morning for work with actual CLOTHES that match, brushed hair and teeth, makeup applied..and let's not forget the kids who are dressed and fed and ready to go. And oh yeah, a full days work and then husbands and dinner and bedtime activities - and then you have time to BLOG? What's the secret? Is it crack? Inquiring minds want to know...
